Why is it relatively rare to observe a solar eclipse

A solar eclipse happens when the moon moves between the sun and earth casting a shadow on the earth. Since the moon is small in comparison to the earth, the shadow cast only covers part of the surface area of the earth. You have to be in the right place to see the eclipse because of the narrow path of the shadow.
