Humans live on the surface of the earth's outer covering, which is called the lithosphere. This rocky layer, which can be up to 310 miles (500km) thick in places, includes the crust and the top part of the mantle. The lithosphere consists of seven major tectonic plates and several smaller ones.

The Lithosphere is one of the four major ways in which the outermost part of the Earth can be divided into (the others are hydrosphere, biosphere and athmosphere). It includes all the rocks and solid inorganic material that is on earth's crust and upper parts of the Mantle.
