Why did the French fight so tenaciously to hold onto Vietnam and Algeria, when other French colonies gained their independence with relative ease? What did these struggles cost France?

The french fought so tenaciously to hold onto Vietnam and Algeria because both were very important to them considering the fact that they had important natural resources and were placed at important strategic locations. These struggles costed France a lot of international loyalty and recognition as being a great state.
