I believe the answer is : a young shepherd or country boy

In old english language, the word swain is used as a slang to describe a country's youngsters.

Typically this word would also be used to describe an apprentice of a certain occupation (such as soon to be knights, young shepherd assistant, or young blacksmith assistant)
