During the nineteenth century, more than today, culture reinforced the gender stereotype. Usually the position of women was housework. In the cases of single women who had access to education, the profession that most employed them was the profession of teacher. The other areas were more common for men.

It was, therefore, a very sexist context. Today the situation is better, women are fighting for equal rights and salaries and occupy positions that were previously predominantly male.
