Scientist alferd wegener formulated the contianental drift hypothesis that states that the contianets onece formed a single landmass, broken up and drifted to their present locations this hypothesis seemes to explain alot of puzzeling observation including the observations of how well the costlines of containts appear to fit together the continental drift hypothesis also explains why fossils of the same plant and animal species are found on continets that are on differnt sides of the atlantic ocean in addition to fossils, similler types of rock and evodence of the same ancient climate conditions were found on several continents

According to the continental drift theory, the supercontinent Pangaea began to break up about 225-200 million years ago, eventually fragmenting into the continents as we know them today.
