Pre-operational stage

According to Piaget, humans undergo various stages of cognitive development through their lifespan. In Jake’s instance where he’s associating one flying object with another (bird and plane) he is demonstrating characteristics of a child in the pre-operational stage of cognitive development (age 2-7 approximately). During this stage, children learn to use language, pictures and associations to express themselves.
