The quote is an example of a metaphor. Explain why.

"It is remarkable how easily and insensibly we fall into a particular route, and make a beaten track for ourselves.

The quote is an example of a metaphor because it implicitly compares the daily routine that we fall into to a well worn path. The comparison is implied, so the words "like" or "as" are not used. This is a common metaphor for falling into a rut, because we do the same things over and over again, as taking a path the same day beats a track into the earth.
