The main thing the "beggar" tells Penelope is that Odysseus is alive. He says that he has met Odysseus on his travels. Penelope isn't convinced that the beggar is telling the truth and asks him for proof which the beggar presents in the form of the perfect description of Odysseus. Penelope is then so moved that she starts to cry.
