In the excerpt from "The Importande of Being Earnest" by Oscar Wilde the idea that is most clearly conveyed about Lady Bracknell is that She thinks that family background is important. Lady Bracknell, a dowager and mother of Gwendolen Fairfax, is a very imposing character. She disapproves of the romance of her daughter and Jack Worthing, who is supposed to be an orphan, and was left inside a leather bag at Victoria Station. Lady Bracknell cannot allow her daughter to marry someone without relatives, that is to say, someone who hasn't got a proper family background.
