Why does the blue sphere have extra holes that are sometimes not used?

The "blue sphere" is a huge blue sphere seen in front of the sun by NASA cameras. It is a coronal hole- region of the corona where the magnetic field reaches out into space rather than looping back down onto the surface.
This sphere has extra holes that are not used because of the nitrogen, which is capable of forming bonds with four atoms.
