Normally, in adults and older children, the thermometer is placed in the mouth. However, in neonates it is contraindicated to use this site for assessing the body temperature. To measure the temperature through the mouth, the thermometer needs to be sealed in the mouth for 3 to 4 minutes. This is impossible to accomplish with neonates.
