Because it was much further away.

the empire of Great Zimbabwe goes back about 100.000 years. It was one of Africa’s greatest civilizations like Egypt and Meroe between 1100-1500 AD. It was famous for its large stone structures. Also its social and economic dynamics have caused much controversy and even Europeans could not fathom that such a well oiled society could possibly be African
