How does freedom of the press guard liberty?

Freedom of the press guards liberty by keeping the government from serving as the only information source. This ties in to freedom of speech. The press has freedom to speak on any issues they want and offer different viewpoints, as opposed to some countries where this sort of expression is prohibited.
Hope this helps!
