Read the excerpt from "What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?” What, to the American slave, is your 4th of July? What is the purpose of this rhetorical question as used by Douglass?

I think its to show what the slaves think from their point of view. I myself don't understand the question all that much. Though, rhetorical questions are used to emphasize a point.
