Charlemagne was king of the Franks and rose to become Holy Roman Emperor in 800 AD. He was the first ruler to unify Western Europe after the fall of the Western Roman Empire in 476 AD. He held a strong relationship with the Catholic Church. Pope Leo III was the one who crowned him as Roman emperor. He would later be canonized by Antipope Paschal III.

He completely opposed the Muslim occupation of Spain, leading an invasion in order to free the territory from Muslim control.
