Why were early factories built near rivers?

Yes, in the Industrial Revolution, people built factories near rivers, and lakes, so they could power their machines. They had those wheels that carried water up and down like a Ferris Wheel, (I can't think of the name) and that wheel turning powered everything they needed, from Cotton Gins, to sewing machines.
Hope this helps!
