Traditionally, Native Americans are believed to have descended from northeast Asia, arriving over a land bridge between Siberia and Alaska some 12,000 years ago and then migrating across North and South America.

Scientists believe that the first people to live in America (the ancestors of the Native Americans) arrived to North America from Asia. They crossed a land bridge that is known as Beringia, located in the Bering Strait. This bridge was a consequence of lower ocean levels due to glaciers locking large amounts of water when the Earth was much colder.
