There were a lot of rich landowners that are synonymous with the western aristocrats who were not happy with the Emperor's rule and hired a lot of people to defend them. They gained power until Minamoto no Yoritomo took control of the state and called himself the shogun. Other groups besides shoguns were the daimyo and the samurai.
