The vote is for the end of Apartheid, the racial caste system which had been in place in South Africa since 1948. Under Apartheid, all forms of social and economic interaction were segregated between the races with the most favored jobs, positions, land, and opportunities reserved for white citizens. de Klerk ended Apartheid as the result of significant pressure from international and domestic critics, notably the African National Congress led by Nelson Mandela.
