Most left-wing voters tend to believe in:

  1. Federal regulation can protect citizens from corporate greed.
  2. The government may need to have a broad role within society.
  3. Social security and other programs have helped improve society.

In general terms, people that hold the political position called "left-wing", believe in social equality, and that this needs to be achieved by the protection from the government, specially to those most vulnerable. left-wing voters are going to support a candidate that will protect ordinary citizens from institutions that have a lot of power, like corporations. They believe that the government needs to be active within society, and not to limits its activities.
