What does this medieval saying mean: “between a lord and his serf there is no judge but god”

Since the lord technically owns the serf, he is able to do whatever he wants with the serf, since the serf is technically his property. However, he really CANT do what he wants, because if he broke any of the commandments GOD gave, he would be sent to Hades (since most of them believed in Christianity during that time)

hope this helps
