Roosevelt was appointed to be Secretary of the Navy and it was in this position that Roosevelt demanded Spain compensate for the loss of the USS Maine. Roosevelt resigned the Navy to lead the 1st US Volunteer Cavalry Regiment, the Rough Riders.
