The term ‘aotearoa’ is the Maori name for New Zealand. Formerly, it is the name for the North Island only but now it is used as the name for the whole country. The Maoris are the indigenous peoples of New Zealand, and they were the ones found living in the island by the European explorers. The term is now used in the national anthem of New Zealand.
