The significance of maximianus is emphasized in the mosaic justinian, bishop maximianus, and attendants, in san vitale, ravenna, through the presence of an identifying inscription, in the sixth century, Justinian, Emperor of Byzantium, appointed Maximian first Archbishop of Ravenna. His main mission in the city was to face the Arianism of the previous rulers, the Ostrogoths and to fix the Orthodox cult observed by the court of the Emperor. Maximian appears in many of the mosaics made in Ravenna during the sixth century, but the masterpiece to which he will remain attached is the Chair of Maximian, a spectacular Archbishop's throne, entirely decorated by ivory plates.
