Why does the oxygen atom in a water molecule have a negative charge

Oxygen has a negative ion this means when it reacts ionically it gains two electrons in a water molecule they have covalent bonds (shared electrons) this mean the two hydrogenated have shared there electrons with oxygen so (gained two negative electrons) making it negative
