There are differing schools of thought on Cabral ending up in the Americas and there has been debate on whether he ended up there by accident or intentionally. What is clear is that the intention of the journey was to sail to India, but that the fleet sailed as far west as possible from a stop at Cape Verde, possibly to chase down a ship from their fleet that disappeared at sea, before eventually discovering land in what would now be Northern Brazil.
