The Andes mountains are an example of a CONVERGENT boundary between a continental and oceanic plate. As the plates move toward each other and intersect, once plate gets pulled underneath the other (called subduction). The result of the subduction event is part of the earth's crust being thrust upward, which produces the mountain range. Most mountain ranges are produced in this way.
