There are several things that the nation tried in order to deal with growing sectional differences:
- Northerners refused to accept the fugitive slave act
- John brown and his followers protested slavery in Virginia
- after Lincoln won the election some states seceded from the union
- civil war began when confederate troops fired on fort Sumter

However, this wasn't enough and in the end, it failed.
