this means the paitriots were being judged by the way they prepared for war and the way they caught the war

For Cornwallis the Honor, strategy and intelligence were key points in his way to lead his armies, and fight the different battles in which he was involved.

So he wasn´t too interested in the fact to win (or be defeatead) by any method, a good planification and basically using an effective strategy, besides to be generally succesful, was a really ¨classy¨ and respected way to win.
