The conflict began in 2003 when the government was accused of neglecting the region by the Darfur rebels ( Who took arms for this reason.) The government responded with a counter-insurgency campaign.
Ever since this time, the civilians have been under attack by rebel groups, government troops, etc.
The amount of violence had decreased after 2005 but has risen up later on.
