an allusion is a reference made to hint at something without saying it directly.
this can include a person, place or event and like many allusions its up to the reader to understand it and make the connection.
example: Jeez sally sure is a grinch around the holidays.
this is refrencing the grinch who was unhappy all the times especially at Christmas .
