During his early years, Otis was a Loyalist, however, some of his pamphletes later inspired the Patriots as it showed strong ideas regarding liberty, property and autonomy.

According to Otis, by paying taxes, it should provide a full citizenship state, which wasn´t effective for the colonists linving in North America as they didn´t have parliament representation. Therefore, as per Otis, paying taxes but not having political representation, was a vile tyranny.
