D) to represent their interests in government
A is incorrect because political candidates can effect economy but that is not the main purpose of their jobs, their main purpose is in government.
B and C are incorrect because electing a political candidate does not create or get rid of policies. A political candidate had a political party, a political party as an umbrella - or grouped ideas - that it will strive to work towards.
So we are left with D as the correct answer.
