Why were people emboldened to start questioning an institution as powerful as the church?

People were emboldened to start questioning the church because they became more independent and able to sustain themselves without the help of the church. Additionally, as societies began to communicate across geographies, people understood different lifestyles that were less dependent on the church and commerce started to take precedent.
