The Xiognu brutally conquered other nomadic tribes, often killing their leaders and forcibly incorporating them into the Xiongnu state. This created resentment among the various conquered peoples, which, coupled with some uncertainty regarding an heir to the throne, led to a civil war in the Xiongnu state from 60-53 BC.
