What practices of the hessians conflicted with boniface's understanding of christianity? how did he confront the persistence of these practices?

The hessians practiced magic and believed in pagan Gods. To dissuade this belief, Boniface is said to have cut down the Oak of Jupiter to show that their beliefs were a fallacy.
