Was Ferdinand Magellan a success or failure

It was a success because he was the first to circumnavigate the earth. He also discovered the Philippines. His voyage demonstrated the need for an international date line. It also demonstrated that sailing westward you can reach Asia. Not only all of this, but many things in astronomy are named after him i.e. Magellanic Clouds(Galaxies), Magellan Crater (on Mars)
