Why were the divisions between groups harmful to rome?

In Roman times, the divisions between the groups were investigating for the Empire because it resulted in a high amount of infighting and conflict. Because of this, they were unable to stand united again external threats and forces. This instability resulted in the fall of the Roman Empire.
