During strenuous exercise, fast source of energy is usually needed to carry out the needed exercise. The body provide for this need by stimulating anaerobic oxidation of glucose in the muscles. The process produce 2 ATP per one glucose molecule. During this process latic acid and carbon dioxide are also produced. The latic acid produced accumulate as time goes on and it is the one responsible for muscle burn that is usually experience by athletes during strenuous exercise.
