It prevents you from rapidly straining and injuring your muscles during an intense workout. It also gets your heart rate up which pumps blood into your muscles, giving them more "fuel" for your workout.

it looses up your muscles, same with cars in a way, you let it warm up before romping it, it gets the blood flow going
