The Karankawa Indians of the Gulf of Mexico inhabited the region now known as Texas. They had relatively benign encounters with individual early Spanish explorers, but those who came later were primarily involved in the slave trade. These Spaniards would coerce or trick the Karankawa into lives of forced labor with the result that the two peoples were continuously at war through most of the eighteenth century.
