Several important diseases were transmitted to Europeans: Yellow Fever and possibly syphilis. However, American Indians (and subsequently Pacific Islanders) were much more vulnerable because they had been more isolated physically and consequently did not have the opportunity to develop resistance to contagious disease which were mainly inconveniences to Europeans, Africans, and Asians, especially smallpox and measles.
