that means we divide top and bottom by the same whole number, until we cannot find any other number except for 1, where there is no remainder for these divisions.

so, usually if we don't see the solution right away, we go along the prime numbers starting with 2 :

can we divide 48 and 54 by 2 without remainder ?

yes, and the result is then

24/27

can we divide 24 and 27 by 2 without remainder ?

no. going to the next prime number : 3

can we divide 24 and 27 by 3 without remainder ?

yes, and the result is

8/9

can we divide 8 and 9 by 3 without remainder ?

no. and there is no other prime number I can divide both numbers with.

so, 8/9 is the lowest or simplest form.
