How do cells such as algae and protists avoid lysis in fresh water?

The protists were able to avoid lysis by having its function of the contractile vacuole in which it helps in pumping the water which are enough or excess to get it out of the cell. While the algae avoids lysis was because of its cell wall that is rigid in nature.
