Charles A. Beard, an American historian of the early 20th-century, used those exact words in his most famous work, 1913's An Economic Interpretation of the Constitution of the United States. In this book, he argued that the Constitution was crafted mainly because the founding fathers of the country were invested in protecting their own financial holdings.
