A fever that increases body temperature by 1 degree F will raise a person's base metabolic rate by somewhere in the realm of 7%. For a two-degree rise, as in this case, the rise will be approximately 14%. With a base metabolism of 1500kcal and adding 14% to that rate, the figure becomes (1500 * 1.14), or 1710 kcal.
