Oxytocin and prolactin are released after a woman gives birth, for the majority of women who have healthy pregnancies.

Hormones are chemical “messengers” that your body makes. Prolactine is the hormone that allows a woman to produce milk after she gives birth.

Prolactin is also known as the “mothering” hormone. It is central to breast milk production. High levels of prolactin with early breast feeding may foster women’s caretaking behaviors and adjustment to being a mother.
