They could not repay their loans or afford to buy basic necessities.

Farmer's were greatly affected by the dust bowl. The dust bowl was a huge drought in the Great Plains of the USA. With no rain, crops were not able to grow. When crops don't grow, farmers have no means of providing for their families.
