The southern colonies - Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia - had a rich soil that was perfect for farming and its climate was warm and the winter was not strong. Because of that, the growing season was longer than in the other regions. They produced cotton, tobacco, rice, and indigo.
